Paul Rodriguez Jr. Paul Rodriguez Jr. is a professional skateboarder and son of comedian Paul Rodriguez. Paul Jr., or “P-Rod,” as he is called in the skateboarding world, is considered one of the rising stars of action sports. His father’s celebrity status had nothing to do with his son’s success in skateboarding. To tell the truth, his father wasn’t thrilled with his son’s choice of career at first. But as Paul Jr. started winning on the pro-skateboarding circuit, his father did a second take and now is one of his biggest fans. We spoke to P-Rod about his career, the Internet, and action sports when we caught up with him in Los Angeles.

1. Did your father’s celebrity help you in the skateboarding world?

No, I don’t really think so. I mean, I don’t think him telling jokes could make me skate better. Jokes aren’t going to make Nike go, “Oh, hey, we want to sign up your son on his skateboard, we want to sponsor him.” It’s kind of a whole separate deal.

2. What would you tell teens who want to skate professionally some day?

Basically, don’t listen to anybody unless they give you positive advice. Find something you like to do. Find a passion. Don’t waste time – just do it!

3. How has the Internet helped you in your career?

I’m always on the Internet checking out Web sites of all my sponsors and things like that. It’s like a separate world of its own. It’s a good source of information about skateboarding and it is a whole other outlet for marketing.

4. about online safety? What advice do you have for teens on the Internet?

Oh man, that’s the type of safety you’ve really got to watch out for. You’ve got to really watch who you talk to and don’t be careless. Keep your eyes open, keep your ear to the streets and pay attention, you know!
