Return to Celebrity Corner
I'm Jeff Garcia, quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers.
I will be answering questions and talking to you about Internet safety right here in the "Quarterback Corner" on i-SAFE.
I would like to start by introducing myself. I grew up in Gilroy, California and I have two younger sisters. I have been playing football for most of my life and I just started my fifth season playing for the San Francisco 49ers.
In my line of work, it is very important to take the necessary precautions to remain safe on the field. Although I have offensive linemen to protect me in the pocket, once I am out of the pocket I have to rely on my own instincts to keep myself safe. The same can be said about the Internet. Although the Internet is exciting, fun and educational, sometimes there are hidden dangers. We all need to make sure that we can take precautions to remain safe online.
Join me here in the "Quarterback Corner" as we talk about the Internet safety equipment and knowledge that you need to stay safe on the worldwide playing field.
This month I thought I would answer some general questions so we can get acquainted. So lets get started!
Q&A with Jeff Garcia:
What was the hardest obstacle in your life that you had to overcome and where did you find the strength to overcome it?
"The hardest obstacle or obstacles that I had to overcome in my life were the unfortunate losses of my brother, Jason and my sister, Kimberly in two separate tragic accidents. I don't believe that these are situations that you ever overcome. I do believe that you have to find ways to move on. I chose to move on by trying to be the best person that I could possibly be and to establish a stronger relationship with my parents and family."
How and why did you get involved with i-SAFE and Internet Safety?
"The reason that I got involved with i-SAFE and Internet safety is because today's youth are spending more and more time on the computer and less time on outdoor activities. Because of that, it is important for our children to know the difference between wrong and right and to learn how to search the web responsibly."
What advice would you give kids and teens about growing up in a cyber world today?
"I would encourage kids and teens today to educate themselves using the computer and utilize it to increase your knowledge in a positive way - but remember that you need balance in life. Therefore, a healthy mind and heart also requires positive physical activity, like individual or team sports, either recreational or organized. I feel a strong mind can only grow stronger with a strong heart!"
What has been the highlight of your football career so far?
"The highlight of my career so far has been twofold: winning a championship while I was playing with the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League; and representing the San Francisco 49ers in the last three Pro Bowls."
What goals have you set in your life that you have not yet achieved?
"I hope to lead the 49ers to a Super Bowl victory and to someday be married and begin a family. Then, I will feel complete."
