A new person is hanging out in the online neighborhood, the cyber bully. They have no face and no name, but their words can hurt feelings and destroy
self-esteem. We wanted to find out why cyber bullies do what they do, so we visited the Cyberspace Detention Center to talk with Jax. She’s a cyber
bully who is currently detained there.
1. Hello, Jax, we just wanted to ask you a few questions.
Shoot. I’m pretty bored anyway.
2. Well, first, why are you here at the Cyberspace Detention Center?
I did something stupid. I sent mean messages to a lot of people. It was supposed to be a joke but not very many of them found it funny.
3. How did you send your messages?
Oh, it’s simple. I sent text messages, posted in chat rooms, and sent emails. Once I even made a website about someone and posted some really bad
pictures on it. I didn’t think it was a big deal. I’d seen other people doing it and had a big laugh about it.
4. you ever think what you were doing was hurting someone?
Not then. At school we always joked about each other. You didn’t let it bother you. I didn’t think doing the same thing online is any different, but it
really is. When you make fun of someone or say bad things about someone online, lots of people see it – a lot more! People can’t tell that you are joking
when you say something mean online, and a lot more people can get hurt.
5. How did you get caught?
I thought I was being pretty smart. When my friends blocked me, I began sending messages to people I didn’t know. How could they know where the messages
were coming from? I was wrong. It turns out there are ways to monitor the Internet and they were able to trace all that stuff back to me. I didn’t even
know I was in trouble until Officer Ward showed up at my door, but now I've realized how hurt people were by my bullying.
