For skateboard legend Danny Way, his unprecedented third gold medal in Big Air competition at X Games 12 was just another day on the ramp. Way
soared his way into the record books by jumping over a 70-foot gap between ramps, flipping backward in the air, and landing at 50 miles per
hour. For Way, that’s just routine. After all, this is the guy who jumped the Great Wall of China on his skateboard. i-DRiVE TV caught up with
Way at the X Games for a few pointers.
1. How has technology influenced your sport?
I got a Blackberry the other day, so I can actually handle my business a little better (laughs).
2. How has the Internet helped skateboarding as a sport?
Obviously the Internet is a portal for our industry and our skateboard community. It’s definitely the foundation of marketing, advertising, and also
community. Between blogs and forums and things like that, it’s very powerful.
3. Danny, you’ve done some exciting things like jumping the Great Wall of China on a skateboard. What’s going through you mind when you’re
flying through the air?
I think I’m having a great time! This is an unbelievable opportunity, and those moments are priceless. It’s hard to explain the feeling. But it’s
quite a rush!
4. How do you get the confidence to do what you do?
I look at the 25 years I’ve been skateboarding and use that as my guide to get me to where I am.
5. What do you tell kids who want to be professional skateboarders?
If they’re that inspired, and they love what they’re doing and have a passion for it like I did, it’s an amazing life. The amount of opportunity I’ve
had in my life to do the most unique and cool things is so priceless. Above and beyond, just having the thrill of riding a skateboard, it’s shown me
so much about the world and about people.
6. What about safety in your sport?
Every aspect of what we do is dangerous, but there is a comfort zone within the danger. It’s all about finding that comfort zone. That takes a lot of
practice and patience. There’s always variables and risks, and anyone can get hurt at any given time, but all the guys that are out here have some level
of confidence in what they’re doing. Oh, and, wear your helmet and pads!
