Captain Wits Captain Wits is a pioneer.  He’s a co-founder of the Carnegie Cyber Academy.  The Academy trains cadets to be safe in Cyberspace.  Although Captain Wits is retired from active duty, he still runs the Academy store.  We stopped by to ask a few questions.

1. Hello, Captain Wits.  Oh, excuse me.  Did we wake you up?

Not at all. I was just meditating on messenger ferrets.  Now what can I do for you?

2. Well, Captain, we’d like to ask you a few questions about the Carnegie Cyber Academy?

Sure! I know everything about the Academy. I’m retired now, but I run the store here.  I sell things to help cadets decorate their dorm rooms. Why I’ve got plenty of things, posters, lamps, rugs…. Fiddlesticks, where was I?  You know, I helped start the Academy in…let’s see…it was back in 1995.

3. Why cyber defense?

The Internet was beginning to be overrun with Cybervillains like M.C. Spammer.  He’s a tricky one that M.C. Spammer.   Captain Marbles and I saw the need for a trained force of young men and women who can recognize and deal with Cybervillains.

4. Well, yes, Captain, but what makes a Cyber Defender?

Cyber Defenders learn how to recognize and deal with those pesky Cybervillains.  They are also responsible for ensuring the safe use of the internet. The training here is tough and tricky, but it’s exciting and fun, too.  I remember when I first started the Academy. I thought bees might make the best Cyber Defenders.

5. Bees!

That’s what I said.  But the little guys just couldn’t get the hang of using a keyboard. So we decided that young people would be more effective.  Still, I wish those bees would have worked out.  They’re very interesting, you know.  They’re busy all the time.  And they’re well armed and they have excellent direction skills and did you know they….

6. Ah, yes.  Well, thank you, Captain.  It’s been a pleasure talking to you.  I’ll let you get back to work.

Well, I do have my hands full running this store, but I sure enjoy meeting new cadets.  Tell everyone to sign up for the Academy training.  It’s been nice talking to you, but I must return to my meditations.  Messenger ferrets are going to replace e-mail I tell you. Goodbye for now.
