October is Computer Learning Month. As part of our Internet Safety program, we invited Adrianna Sgarlata, Miss Virginia 2006 and i-SAFE spokesperson, to
talk to us about Internet Safety. She graciously took time out of her busy schedule to pay us a visit on October 16th.
1. Do you shop online?
All the time.
2. Which Web site do you shop at most?
My boyfriend is a member of a specialty online shopping retailer. I feel safe shopping there because it is password protected. They offer lots of private
labels, apparel, energy drinks, cosmetics, TVs, plus all the products from partner stores like Circuit City and Barnes & Noble.
3. Do you also check prices at comparison shopping Web sites?
No. My reason is I like certain brands, so I stick with them.
4. Are there any precautions you take when shopping online?
Yes. I wait until a pop-up window tells me the particular site I am visiting is protected. I always make sure it is protected and secure before I shop. I
only go to reputable sites.
5. Do you shop at online boutique sites you never heard of before if a friend recommends it?
No. Although, it depends. I might, but I am a lot more cautious. If I go to a boutique site I always check my credit card statements afterward. But since
that leaves me very uneasy I usually avoid it. If anything goes wrong I am left wondering, ‘how did they get my information?’ It happened to me once, and
once was enough.
6. What advice would you give students today when they shop online?
Do not make willy-nilly purchases. I like using a service, like going through my PayPal account. I trust them because they are so secure in how they retain
private information.
